Master in the house

We will ignore the fact I have been away for a while. I’m not hurt, I’ve been working hard, I just haven’t been posting.

A quick catch-up: I did a triathlon and a few races. Nothing great or terrible happened.

Now on to today….

My focus these days is my triathlon work. I did my first Tri of the year a couple of weeks ago. My bike was very good, but I was slow in the water and on my run.

I know how to fix the run. I have not pushed to hard over the past year on my runs. I am still running an 8.5 minute mile, but it is not fast enough. I think I can finally call myself healed from my problems I experienced about a year ago. I have been pain free for 12 months. It’s time to start pushing again. I’ve started with a few sprints in my midweek runs and hill work on my longer runs. Plus I am pushing harder on the flats. I would think a few months of this should get me to where I would like to be speed wise.

Then there’s my old friend the swim. The one leg I have tried to conquer and the one leg that keeps kicking my butt. After a year and a half of swimming I am still below average compared to other prople in my age group. I have progressed since last year, but not enough.

So today marks day 1 of my venture into MASTER’S SWIM. Master’s swim is basically swimming lessons for grown-ups. It’s twice a week at my health club at 5:15am. This morning was my first class. I did my best to fit in, but frankly I felt like a small fish in a big pond. The instructor could not have been more helpful. She came over introduced herself, basically pegged me for what I was, and started to give me drills to do.

Before this morning my longest swim was 1600 meters. Today I did 2000. Including 200 kicking. Which appears to be a big problem for me. In the hour I was in the pool I shaved 2 strokes per length of the pool. It was incredibly satisfying and quite draining. These “Master” people really know how to push themselves.

Based on today’s outcome I will definitely be back. If I keep progressing it should take me about 2 or 3 strokes per length of the pool by the end of July.
